About book Triptych (2006)

This was another first for me. It was my first crime thriller and my first book by Karin Slaughter. Is Triptych a book I would have picked out for myself? Probably not but that is the beauty of Goodreads. For the last few weeks I have been following by sweet friend Mo’s status updates and review’s for this series and kept toying with the thought of picking this one up and jumping into the series. I worried that it would be too shocking and hideous, a story that wouldn’t appeal to me. There were moments that were rather shocking and hideous but I quickly found myself unable to turn away from the story, the mystery and the characters. I am hooked. I will be making my way through this series. There is a peculiarity about Will Trent that has me intrigued. I need to know more about this guy and Triptych is just the beginning. The setting is Atlanta, Georgia. When the book starts out we are hit with a gruesome murder of a hooker. The writing of the scene was so vivid and shocking. The platform had been set. A few characters had been introduced and the mystery begins. As each character is introduced and their personal stories start to unfold I struggled with keeping my emotions and reaction towards them in check. With the investigation of the most recent murder underway, there are certain things that link it to past attacks and murders. We are introduced to a character John Shelley whose life was stripped away from him at a young age, convicted of one of these past murders. He is finally given his freedom back only to be faced with the fear of someone toying with that freedom. When the Atlanta police department sets out to find the person who committed this horrid crime different angles are pursued and nothing is clear cut. Michael Ormewood was the lead investigator and was rather combative at every turn but he had earned his rank and he would do his job. He is paired with Leo, an older detective and he was that buffer and the one that smoothed out Michael’s wrinkles. But there was some crazy shit going on. People had been murdered, a young girl has gone missing and there was some guy out there that has to be stopped. The pieces of the puzzle were not coming together quick enough. He had to be found. Angie Polaski was a vice cop who was also working the case. She was someone difficult to figure out. She was rough, lived life hard and did her job well. She shared a past with two men and was engaging in a relationship with another man. This was typical of Angie. She was like a Triptych. A canvas that appeared one way on the outside but different on the inside. Her life was about to implode. Tangled within this mystery is the man that has me intrigued. Will Trent. Early on in the story we learn of his past, his relationships and his affliction. His determination and his inquisitiveness is what sets him aside as a Special Agent. It also gets him into trouble. Will has this sixth sense with things and decides to check into a lead that starts to put the pieces of the puzzle together. But a moment of doubt sets a certain ball rolling. Will has to rely on someone he didn't expected to. In the end it was a choice that made all the difference. This one was a definite winner for me. I’ve already started Fractured. Loving it so far!

Another first time read for me with this author Karin Slaughter. I actually started getting her books when I found this one on the sales rack at our local UBS. I had heard some positive things about the book and I finally decided to try it out. I have to say I am so glad I did. Triptych is the first book in the Will Trent series. And now I gotta say if this book is any inclination of the rest of the series, I will be one happy camper! The premise of the story sold me when I first read the synopsis. I was definitely both interested and intrigued to get started on it. One thing I gotta say is that I loved how the author wrote and timed this story. Let's say the order of things and how they all connected to make this amazing story. The descriptions of both the plot and the characters were beautifully done. The imagery of the characters were so well written it made me feel like I knew them and became a part of their lives. We start out with a newspaper clipping reporting about 15 year old Mary Alice Finney being raped, mutilated and murdered. Nothing else was included in the clipping other than it was an obvious homicide. So we fast forward to the year of 2006 and land in the middle of an investigation of women being raped, mutilated, and murdered. We get to meet various detectives and people involved, and how the cases are being handled. Enter Will Trent and Michael Ormewood. Two of the detectives involved. We jump back into the shoes of Jonathan Shelley in 1985. A 15 year old male convicted of murdering Mary Alice Finney. He has no recollection of murdering her, yet he wakes up next to her dead body, and does the only thing he can, Run. He serves 22 years in prison. And then we get to live the life of John and I loved that. As far as the characters go, there are a whole bunch that you get to both love and hate in this book. John is my favorite character, and you are probably asking me why. Because the author wrote him that way. A convicted felon that she makes you feel sorry for. Makes you feel what he feels. I loved that I to get to know who he was, what he endured and who he becomes. I also like Will Trent and Angie Polaski. Will, an agent with the GBI is pretty much a good boy and a hard worker, but he has a lot of problems he has to deal with due to past life issues. Angie is a vice cop working the beat with the prostitutes. In order to do that she has to be one of them. She lives a very reckless life, with a very foul mouth and attitude, but she always has good intentions.I have to recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, suspense or crime novels. This is written so well I was sorry it ended. It makes me happy that it is a series and I can enjoy many more books with Will Trent! It is so deserving of the 5 stars I gave it.

Do You like book Triptych (2006)?

4.5 stars.A bit gruesome at times but a solid read. Will Trent is a very intriguing character. Look forward to reading more about him. In the city of Atlanta, women are dying—at the hands of a killer who signs his work with a single, chilling act of mutilation. Leaving behind enough evidence to fuel a frenzied police hunt, this cunning madman is bringing together dozens of lives, crossing the boundaries of wealth and race. And the people who are chasing him must cross those boundaries too. Among them is Michael Ormewood, a veteran detective whose marriage is hanging by a thread—and whose arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. And Angie Polaski, a beautiful vice cop who was once Michael's lover before she became his enemy. But another player has entered the game: a loser ex-con who has stumbled upon the killer's trail in the most coincidental of ways—someone who may be the key to breaking the case wide open "You just one weird motherfucker." “He wore a watch on his wrist, but only as a cheat to help him differentiate between left and right.” Will turned his back to her, looking at the painting over the mantel. It was a triptych, three canvases hinged together to make one image when it was open, another image when it was closed. He had always assumed she liked the duplicity of the piece. It was just like Angie, one thing inside, another out.I don't know what to make of Angie. Not sure if she features in future books. Kinda don't want her to be the love interest ... "Think about it," ... "Think about what's going to happen to you."The light went out.The door closed. The bolt slid home. She was going to die ...

Tríptico. . . tríptico. . . .Joyce, a irmã de John. Adorei as suas intervenções.Punho de aço mas coração de manteiga. Will Trent, é outra personagem excelente. Não sei porquê, isto irritou-me solenemente.Em suma, um livro bastante bom, que vale pela construção dos personagens mas que não apresenta nada de original.Um bom policial nevertheless.

I will first start with the title of the book. This is the first time I remember when I look up a title in the dictionary. My digital Collins says:triptych [ˈtrɪptɪk:] n 1. a set of three pictures or panels, usually hinged so that the two wing panels fold over the larger central one: often used as an altarpiece 2. a set of three hinged writing tablets From Greek triptukhos, from tri- + ptux plate. One of the story's characters has a triptych on her mantelpiece. When the two side panels fold over the central one a new image or canvas is formed. There is a blurb on the book cover: Three people with something to hide. One killer with nothing to lose. I believe the Triptych reference is to these three people and the way their deception makes things take different forms at different times.I bought this book after I read Fractured by the same author because I liked the character of Special Agent Will Trent and wanted to read more about his personal story. This book did not disappoint, as the plot moved at a cracking pace. There were plenty of unexpected twists that kept me turning the pages, and re-reading some parts to discover how the author expertly wove the pattern of deception. I love the way Karin Slaughter handles her characters. Unlike clean predictable sleuths such as Temperance Brennan (Kathy Reich's forensic anthropologist), Karin Slaughter comes up with more vulnerable and gritty characters for her police force. They show many human frailties that anyone can relate to and sympathize with. Her characters fight their private battles as they are fighting crime, and this makes them all the more appealing. The story starts with the murder and mutilation of Aleesha Munroe, a prostitute and a drug addict living in one of Atlanta's rough neighborhood. Detective Michael Ormwood is in charge, but he soon finds out that he needs to work with Special Agent Will Trent from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). Will Trent is helping out because the murder has some similarities with other attacks around the state. Within 24 hours Michael's next door neighbor is found dead in his backyard and in order to solve the mystery the two men need to look back into a past that refuses to stay buried. I will not elaborate more on this excellent thriller in order not to spoil it for future readers. More than just a good thriller the story challenges the perceptions of right and wrong, justice and injustice. It showed the grim reality of prison and why a convicted felon almost always ends up back in prison. I will remember many characters in this book. For example there was the mother character who fought bravely and unrelentingly for her son, it was a character I related to. She stands in contrast to the mother who fought blindly for her son doing a lot of damage to people's lives in the process.Another character later in the book speaks poignantly about her children: "It's the most wonderful blessing God has given us, our ability to bring a child into the world. You hold them in our arms that first time, and they are more precious than gold. Every breath you take after that is only for your child". This is so very true.
