About book A Boy And His Dragon (Being (2013)

Bertie is a dragon-shifter and an author who needs an assistant. Arthur is a history student in need of a job.Basically the bulk of the book is Arthur and Bertie’s slow dance of getting to know one another and their growing attraction. The language is sometimes strange and halting, like the juxtaposition of modern times and the Victorian age that is a dragon in modern times. After a long, long build up, Arthur realizes he is “important” to Bertie in an above average way and the two finally connect.**I find it hard to rate this book. On the one hand I loved the idea of it. The slow build. The sweetly old-fashioned phrasing of things. The romance of the dragon and his boy. On the other hand it was sometimes jarring when Arthur would leave Bertie’s world and in his head be talking about f*cking and cell phones and the rest of the modern world.I loved their relationship and the basic tenets of the story, and I guess maybe I would have wanted a finer-toothed comb for editing to smooth some of the ragged edges that left me scratching my head or feeling jolted from the mood. For one, I couldn’t help but think that Arthur was being deliberately obtuse and missing Bertie’s obvious attraction for the purpose of prolonging the story.I would recommend it, I really did like it, but I would warn you that it is not a typical romance. I’d give it a 3.75 out of 5 hearts. This was so boring to me. I had a really hard time getting though it, to be honest. There isn't much outer dialogue in this one, a lot of inner dialogue though.I just felt the story dragged in certain areas and that by the end the MCs pretty much knew nothing about each other. Which they could have solved with more talking. In the end this book just wasn't for me. Plus, they never really addressed Arthur and his dreams about shields and swords. I figured he was going to be a reincarnation of King Arthur or something, or at least related to the red dragons somehow, but it didn't work out that way.I do recommend it though if you're looking for a quirky dragon and an unassuming student historian.
