About book A Nation's Hope: The Story Of Boxing Legend Joe Louis (2011)

I'm sharing this with my book group who is reading Mighty Miss Malone for our FEAR unit this month. Perfect for building background knowledge for the same event - the boxing match between Joe Louis and German Max Schmeling in 1938 - that Chrisopher Paul Curtis includes in his book. Beautiful, emotional, energetic illustrations by Kadir Nelson. It will help the group understand the impact of the event on the morale of America and how it impacted the coming together of two races against a common enemy. Interesting story structure to discuss, too. This book was selected because of the lesson that it teaches. One can take away many lessons and a life lesson from this book. It is important to take into account the time period of this book and the significance of Joe Louis. The book will inform my instruction with providing students a variety of resources when it come to strong athletic figures and others who have made a difference in history. So much is focused on political, scientists and not a lot of sports stars have made a strong focus in history. So this provides the students with a variety of people who have made a difference in society.
