About book A Veiled Deception (2009)

This is my first Annette Blair mystery, although I have read other books and book series' from her and enjoyed them. A Veiled Deception is book one in Blair's Vintage Magic Mystery series and I thought the story was cute. The story centers around Madeira Cutler, a fashion designer in New York by way of Mystick, Connecticut. She returns home to visit family and friends and to take part in the preparations for her younger sister's wedding day. This is precisely the point when drama ensues, as one of the party guests is found murdered in an upstairs bedroom of Madeira's old family home; with the bride to be as the primary suspect. Madeira then begins trying to solve the mystery of the murdered guest and the reasons behind her demise in order to protect her sister and clear her name before the wedding. As, I said previously I thought the story was cute and had a nice plot, although I could have done without some of Madeira's paranormal experiences with her newly discovered gift of psychometry. I did enjoy Madeira's spunk and wit, especially when she was facing off with the town detective Lytton Werner, who was also a childhood friend. I secretly wanted Madeira and Lytton to be a couple instead of her on again, off again FBI boyfriend Nick Jaconetti because I enjoyed their banter. Anyway, the book was ok and I will read the rest of the series to see if each book improves. I loved this little gem! It's a cute mystery, where it's quite fun to guess along with Madeira - or Maddie - as to who killed the victim. It didn't get 5 stars, as there were a few places I had to read the passage several times to figure out who said what or how this person or that suddenly entered the conversation, when I didn't even realize they were in the scene. That halts my reading rhythm so I took a star away for that.Overall a good, cozy mystery, which I will enjoy reading again!
