About book Aşk Tanrıçasının Yemek Okulu (2012)

Happy and an enjoyable quick read. 30% less sap than a Nicholas Sparks novel and the lovers are only minimally star-crossed. The main character Holly does mourn the loss of a boyfriend, but it's not so over-the-top that I wanted to slap her -- at least she's doing something meaningful with her life. I was pleasantly surprised that there was more time dedicated to cooking than sex. Of course everyone falls into bed after 3 dates, but there is very minimal description. With all the cooking, this book seriously made me crave Italian food. As I started reading this novel, I was worried it would be heavy on chick lit and fluff. It was not at all like that. While there's some romance and friendships in this book, it is more about family, love and loss than anything else. Holly's Italian-born grandmother just passed away, bequeathing her house and business to Holly. The business is an Italian food shop, selling homemade pastas and dishes to clientele, as well as teaching a course in Italian cooking. Holly fears she knows nothing about cooking, and sets out to keep the business running. Her grandmother is quite the character, a woman who told fortunes to the locals, and their voices are woven into the story as well.
