About book All God's Children (2013)

I have received for free through Goodreads First Reads all three books in this series and All God’s Children is the first book I read by this author. I enjoyed reading the story of Beth Bridgewater and Joseph Buch and the problems they encounters in Nazi Germany. Beth is a loving, caring and brave young woman who came to Munich to help her Quacker relatives, Aunt Ilse and Uncle Franz, to help them look after their new-born daughter Lisle. Joseph is a doctor who fought on the front to support his country. He is brave, loyal and intelligent and would do anything to protect the people he loves. The story opens in 1942 when Germany and USA where on opposite sides of the fence and being an American in Munich could only bring problems. When Beth meets Joseph there is instant chemistry between the two, but also a lot of fear and mistrust because of their nationalities. . As the story progresses so does their feelings for each other and the risks they are willing to take. Beth is adamant she must help those who need support to leave Germany and escape to safety, while Joseph fights for the Germany he grew up in, a country free from terror and censure. I enjoyed reading the book and I am looking forward to the next two instalments. Anna Schmidt created a good story line, with strong characters and many interesting historical facts. I am curious to find out what happens to the other characters and discover more about Beth and Joseph. Although this book was based on a time in history that I enjoy reading about, whether it is a fiction or non-fiction book, this story did not engage me as much as I thought it would. I found the characters difficult to like and/or understand why the author wrote them the way she did. I also had a problem with the author infusing German dialogue in with the English dialogue, and I have no knowledge of the German language at all. So what were the characters saying at times? I don't know, and that was really frustrating for me! I also had no previous knowledge of the Quaker faith, but I also found it, or how it was at least presented in this book, to have something to be desired in relation to our walk with the Lord. Lastly, so much could have been done with this story, especially in regards to the German resistance to Hitler's regime! Oh, well - maybe I can find a different WWII historical fiction novel, Christian based, that I will enjoy much better.
