About book American Vampire, Volume 1 (2011)

Cool mix of vampire/monster style story in the early 1900 Western era, with an interesting mix of two story arcs with two separate timelines (written by two different authors) that intertwine in a compelling way. I was a little skeptical at first but was sold by the end of issue 5 in this volume. I'm curious to see how the series carries on and how it will be without Stephen King authoring one of the story arcs. One of the best graphic novels I've read in a while. This really is a graphic novel - the story and characters are worthy of a novel and yet we're treated to some truly fantastic artwork from Rafael Albuquerque. We jump around in time from 1880 to 1909 to 1925 following the irreverent outlaw vampire Skinner Sweet (one of the best vampire characters in an age) as he takes revenge on the lawmen who tried to put him away. We also have the story of Pearl Jones a 1920's actress who Sweet perversely turns on a whim. Its a great way to explore the history of America... with the added bonus of vampires and ones that bite. No sparkling, brooding, pretty boys here :D One of the many things to love about this is the interesting vampire lore. We have different types of vampire and I really like the idea of vamps evolving. Its cool that Sweet doesn't know what the limits of his powers are and has to learn.Hurry up and make a film of this! In the mean time on to volume 2....

This was my first choice while trying to get into comic books. As a Stephen King fan I was really interested to see a story of his in comic format. And yes, the story is fresh and filled with emotions, character depth and of course, gore and blood. As a humble novice with comic books I can't compare or make an in depth look at the artwork so I won't try. But I found it fittingly gritty and detailed. The colors are kept pretty dark.Turns out though, even if this story is fresh and outside of the mainstream, Vampires still aren't my thing. I'm not interested enough to see what else awaits.I really like the bound book with it's embedded cover and the original scripts at the end were very interesting.

A nice variant on the vampire theme, finally a Marvel writer that can write good stuff.
