About book Amy And Roger's Epic Detour (2010)

4.5 stars* Oh my gosh this book was so freaking cute! Like it's not cute in the typical sense but there were moments that I was like 'aw how adorbs'. Anyways that isn't what I liked about this book! I loved how Amy changed so much and Roger too! I liked all the people they met and all the detours! The ending almost made me cry because for a second there I got worried about something but all is well! It ended nicely and I like that the author used all those pictures and receipts throughout the story. Seeing the receipt at the end was such a nice touch that I couldn't help but grin like an idiot. I liked how the book wasn't centred on the romance and I just wanted to sing hallelujah when Amy and Roger didn't get together right away! Finally a contemporary author who knows what she's doing. "What did you think?" Goodreads asks me.What did I think... Well.To just summarize this whole review in a few words, this is one of the best books I have ever read. And I have read a lot of good books. If I'm going to be 100% honest, it's hard to describe how I feel about this book, because it's an incredibly emotional connection. I'm not even sure how I'm going to organize this review, because I could rant in wonder about this book for a very long time. For starters, the main character, Amy, is very likable. Even though she's very sad for most of the book. She's lost her dad, only a few months before the book even starts, and it's deeply affecting her. I lost someone to a car accident too, and even though it wasn't someone as close as my own dad, I related to Amy quite well on that level. Her emotions are VERY well-developed over the course of the book. Even though she's a melancholy girl, she has her cute moments of wit and wisdom, and I wanted to be her friend so badly by the end of the story!Roger is also super cool. He has as much personality as Amy does, albeit in pretty different ways. Because the two don't know each other at the beginning of the story, the entire plot of the novel is their budding friendship, as they get know each other and learn to understand the world in totally new ways based on that knowledge.I LOVED the road trip setting. In a beautifully metaphoric way, the road trip became Amy and Roger's individual journeys, as I said, to seeing the world and their own lives differently. And I loved the incredible detail that was poured into each location they visited. (Turns out, the author took the same road trip herself, so the pictures and firsthand information in the book are actually hers.) Every other chapter or so, the text is interrupted by a "scrapbook style" couple of pages- Amy's little travel log that she keeps over the timeline of their trip (complete, as mentioned, with pictures and receipts and other keepsake little treasures). The cast of characters that our leading couple meets over the course of the book are FANTASTIC. Although they're pretty fleeting, most of them "landmarks" along the trip that add so much to the story, even in the short time that our leading couple meets them for. Most of these side characters don't make much of an appearance in the story after Amy and Roger start their car and take off. But I promise you'll love most of them for as long as they're in the story! So, READ THIS BOOK, because I've hardly ever read something so unique...so deep...so fascinating...so ENJOYABLE. Amy and Roger's Epic Detour is definitely one that you want to take. And THAT is what I think, Goodreads. :)
