About book Animal Man 1 (2012)

Another great page turner!I've recently finished volume 1 of the new 52 Swamp Thing reboot, which is building to a crossover with Animal Man. And this goes along with it perfectly. Both of these titles are creepy as hell and I loved every moment of them. These titles brought a story arc unlike any other that I've read in the new 52 so far. It gives time for the story and characters to unfold without feeling rushed. I love the antagonist, 'the rot', it has such a creepy dark vibe that I've seen in few other comics. Buddy Baker is a very down to earth character whom you can relate to very easily, minus the powers of course. His time as Animal Man has somewhat past as he makes time for his family and a "normal" life. When his daughter shows signs of having some similar abilities they are all thrown into a dangerous adventure that threatens the world. Jeff Lemire is a hell of a horror writer, piecing the story together flawlessly. To go along with it we have artist Travel Foreman bringing a completely fresh and beautiful look to the title. Along with I, Vampire I'd say it would be one of the most unique looking books in the new 52.Looking forward to carrying on the journey in volume 2! This book was way above a 5 for me. I loved the story and the artwork and yes it's quite gruesome, but it's completely right for the story being told. The artwork is so sickly and gross that it's almost beautiful in a weird way. I think Animal Man is my favorite run of the New 52. I love that the superhero of the story was just invented to protect his daughter who really has the super powers. It's so wonderful and refreshing and I feel like I could gush about how much I love it (but I'll try to keep it at a minimum). Buddy Baker is just trying to do the best by his family, and he's rolling with the punches throughout this really wild journey. I'm definitely going to have to buy this book for myself so I can read it over and over.
