About book Attack On Titan, Vol. 10 (2000)

This volume is extremely plot-point heavy and it does have a lot of action, but at the same time it seemed slower. Maybe because the focus was more on the secondary characters, Connie, Krista, Ymir, Bertholt and Reiner and several others I don’t remember ever really seeing before. They are holed up in a castle from the old days but it isn’t the safe place they hoped for. These Titan attack at night and they are going to kill everyone if it takes them tearing the place apart brick by brick. The biggest thing that happens is we finally get Ymir and Krista’s histories and a good hard look at their friendship. Really it doesn’t take much reading into it to think that it’s more than friendship on Ymir’s part. Both of their big secrets are revealed. At the darkest before the dawn moment comes, the rest of the survey team shows up with Mikasa, Eren and Armin. Zoe and Armin are quick to assess the situation and come up with wild but accurate theories while Eren is presented with an offer he didn’t expect, revealing finally who was behind the attack five years ago.I will say this, it’s almost too much that Zoe and Armin can always figure things out so fast. I love their characters but if the ‘smart’ characters don’t seem to struggle at least a little then I have to wonder why did no one figure this out 100 years ago. And for that matter, why is it all coming to light now, 100 years afterward and coming to light so fast? It seems a bit odd. Though it does seem more and more likely that this is all the result of a doomsday cult unleashing it on humanity. I’ll be curious to see who and why. But it does feel like the mangaka is groping his way through this. This volume suffers a bit from the "shonen epic battles that go on for several story arcs" syndrome. There's a large battle, revealing a few things that deepen the mystery of what the titans are, but a lot of the plot points are almost too similar to previous revelations to carry the same weight. This volume feels a bit like treading water and not really moving anything forward. But, hey, lots of things got destroyed in epic fashion, so... I almost feel like you could skip this entire volume and still get what's going on when you pick up with 11.
