About book Baby, It's Cold (2000)

3.5 stars round up.I liked this one. I liked how different it felt from Mr. Lanyon's other works that I have read so far. The story began and we hardly understand what was going on. It wasn't until several pages in that we realized Rocky and Jesse were a thing for a while before they parted way, not amicably to boot.I loved the cooking scene, which was very well written and added nuance to the story in the way that only master wordsmiths can. On the other hand... Adding Louise into the equation dilute the page times between Rocky and Jesse. Also, for me, it seems odd that Rocky questioned Jesse's abilities in the kitchen. Weren't they supposed to grew up together? This is another reminder that communications, honest communications, are the key to successful relationship. Both Rocky and Jesse failed to have a heart-to-heart, they were wrong and yet it was the common mistakes any couple did. At least here they get a chance to work things out. I felt that there were some lacking in descriptions of the MCs. Rocky was supposed to be heavily tattooed and have several piercings. It would be fun to see those got some plays in the story. What I absolutely love best though, was the ending, especially what happen at the very last sentence. Baby, it's Cold is a delightful holiday novella from the Comfort and Joy anthology. Josh Lanyon's holiday stories never disappoint and this one was no exception. It's wild, funny and heart-squeezing at times. Reading the story feels a lot like watching a brilliant sitcom episode — it's extremely visual, perfectly timed, immensely entertaining with priceless dialogue that makes you laugh out loud. The "love triangle" going on in the story gives a delicious final touch to it all. I also like the fact that the title has more than one meaning, but most of all I like how cleverly Lanyon uses Jesse's cold to escalate things, to change... everything. There are lots of stars on the cover of this novella — I can even spot 5 red ones. It must be an omen! :-) Baby, it's Cold is a perfect holiday read in December, in January, in February, in March, in April, in May, in June... well, I'm sure you see what I mean.Highly recommended!
