About book Barging In (2011)

I loved this! It was not only a good MM book, but an interesting look at a way of life I've never really thought about before. Of course I've seen canal boats before but never really considered the life of the people on them. I didn't realise it was such a community as is presented in Barging In.That aside, I really enjoyed the romance between Robin and Dan. It progressed at a nice pace and had a good resolution. 3.5 starsI really appreciated getting this as a Goodreads first-read, so thank you for that. This was a fun, engaging beach-read of a romance. Or should I say “canal-read”, seeing as how the setting, which I thoroughly enjoyed, was the waterways and narrowboats of the Bath region in England. There were nice descriptions of the canal, towns, geography, culture and people; and personally since I like to get into the settings, I would have liked a little more descriptive language to help me picture it even more.I saw it as a beach read because of its light, intriguing gay-romance story. It was an amusing story all along but a little slow at first, if not a little predictable … but it is a beach romance after all. I hadn’t fully bought-in emotionally until about mid-way – once one of them finally shares a very emotional personal experience. After that I was fully engaged in the characters and wanting their relationship to work. The characters were fairly well-developed – I believed in the POV, insecurities, struggles and growth each of the two gay men had with themselves and each other – a gay-boy coming out of his twenties and thinking he’s not meant for anything long-term, the other a bisexual recovering from the failure of a previous boyfriend. Things a lot of us have seen and can relate to personally in the gay culture at least. As an m/m romance, I also got into the scintillating sex scenes. The sex was hot, sometimes rough, which worked for me, and in fact I think it could have been even better with a bit more erotic descriptions of what we men feel. I did like how, unlike some books, it wasn’t overloaded with too many scenes; they fit right into the story line and were reflective of the start of a relationship. All-in-all, I enjoyed this fun ride down the canals.
