About book Better Off Friends (2014)

The timeline of the book took a while to get used to.Occasionally Macallan annoyed me. Frustrated me. Made me want to throw this book into her face. Sometimes she was being an unnecessarily clingy friend. In fact I could not connect with her at all. Am I a terrible human being for not feeling the least bit sorry or empathised with the loss of her mom? Eh. It was like the death never had any meaning in this story other than a plot device or a cheap attempt to give Macallan's character some "depth". Whatever.Levi was whiny. God. Even though this book is written in two POVs– Macallan and Levi's–, it hardly felt like I was reading from two different people. Being in Levi's head felt like I was in a girl's head. He did not come off as a real teenage guy. More like some kid trying to suck up to people.Overall, this book was just ehh to me. I really enjoyed this book because I am a total sucker for books that follow friends over the course of several years. Watching (well, reading...) characters make right and wrong choices as they navigate their teenage years is so relatable. You want to tell them "No, don't!" or "Come on, just tell him/her, already!" Being privy to both a guy and girl's thoughts during such formative years was really fun.
