Incredible detail in the illustrations and a story that flexes to fit a lot of interests and age groups. The scratchboard medium that earned Beth Krommes a Caldecott for "The House in the Night" takes color surprisingly well, just as it did in her other well known work, Swirl By Swirl. Blue on Blue has a folk art mood that matches its small farm setting. I did think the breaching whale at the end was a bit incongruous, though.
