About book Blutsgeschwister (2013)

This is YA lit? Well, if this passes for acceptable YA lit, then I am pleased as punch. "Slice of Cherry" is a bloodier, ballsier coming-of-age story about two sisters, Kit and Fancy, who have to decide whether or not to follow in their serial killer father's footsteps. Kit and Fancy are interesting and believable characters, and their predicament -- whether or not to give into the darkness within -- is one I can relate to. Kit is the older one, in the throes of puberty and boy-crazy. Fancy, our main character, is younger, and is obsessively clinging to childhood and stubbornly refusing to grow up. She clings to Kit, making their relationship stifling at times, especially when the Turner brothers, Elon and Gabriel, appear on the scene. In addition to her Peter Pan syndrome and Kit's willingness to grow up, Fancy must also deal with her inner darkness, her desire to kill and maim those who anger her. The knowledge that the entire town hates her father because he gave in to his own dark desires makes Fancy realize that she must be careful and that she must strike a balance within the darkness.Mixed up in all of this sibling drama and self-discovery is the town of Portero, where our story takes place. Portero is both magical and horrifying; monsters roam the streets somewhat freely and are met with a mix of annoyance and terror from the townspeople. Portero is full of magic and darkness and light, making it the perfect backdrop of Fancy's various dilemmas: Do I grow up or stay a kid? Do I give in to the darkness or do I suppress it? How much do I give in? Is there a balance? Can I find it? In this book we get to follow two of the towns residents, I couldn't help but feel sorry for one of the sisters even though they both go about killing and their father is a famous serial killer you strangely become fond of them. I would recommend reading Bleeding Violet first, even though it was released second, as the town itself is crazy and filled with strange things you get a better picture of what this town is really like with Bleeding Violet.

Think Dexter but with teenage woc sisters. A gory, romantic drama with a nice twist ending.
