About book Breakfast At Sally's: One Homeless Man's Inspirational Journey (2008)

I started out liking this book. I liked the author and his dog and looked forward to learning more about this man and his life. I stopped 2/3 of the way through. I had too many questions. And I got bored with the endless whining and pot smoking and drinking and twitching and Richard somehow trying to make it all sound noble in some way. It began to sound like a bunch of guys in perpetual adolescence--the type who live in mom's basement and go hang out with whoever's got enough money for some gas, some bud, or some booze. And some free food. I'm not hard hearted. But, spoiler here, I guess, why did this educated man have all his family turn on him? Why was he shunned? He blames it on the digital age. OK. But why didn't he look for some sort of employment with the diligence put into finding ways to while away the time between free meals? OK, he's depressed. So he repeats the same theme over and over. Rich people have money and jobs and he and his buddies don't. Yes, I know! You told me 100 times already! Someone dear to me has been homeless for years. He is an addict and has been since puberty. Richard was not. He seemed to revel in his sad state. I got sick of the book and sick of him and had to stop. Why 2 stars? I liked the beginning. The heroes of this book are the generous souls who feed and share space and kind words to folks like Richard and his friends. Sally and the Methodist pastor and many others. He seems to take them for granted. Oh Richard! Grow up! Seriously, this book should be required reading for everyone. I thought this book might be depressing but it isn't at all...at least, not in the details. The fact that this goes on while no one seems to be outraged by it hurts my heart. I'm not in a very good situation myself at the moment but I will find some way to help. What an amazing story! And the fact that it played out all within 20 miles of where I am makes it even more astonishing.I couldn't possibly recommend this book highly enough. It will touch your soul.
