About book C Is For Corpse (2005)

Another exciting mystery in the Kinsey Millhone series. In this one, we get to see Kinsey get a little bit attached to the person who hires her. Bobby Callahan is too young to be a love interest for Kinsey, but she does like him and considers him her friend. This is the first time that we really get to see Kinsey show much emotion towards another character that is not a potential love interest. She is starting to get developed as a character and show the reader a little more of what goes on in Kinsey's head emotionally. We also get to see a little side mystery that is a personal matter for Kinsey. While looking into a case for Bobby Callahan, she also tries to find out a little bit about her landlord's new love interest. This is also the first time that we see Kinsey put her PI skills towards something that has to do with her life, instead of just another client hiring her. That was interesting and it shows that Kinsey really does care about more than just her job, she cares about her friends too. I am usually pretty good at guessing who did what in murder mysteries (another reason I don't read them that often, too predictable), however with the Kinsey Millhone series so far, I suspected the criminal in the first book and had a little inkling about what happened in the second book, but this book I didn't see it coming until the very end. That is pretty good, since the whole fun in mystery books is to try and guess what really happened and who did it. So far it hasn't been blindingly obvious from the get go who did it and what happened and I like that. I am hoping that the next books in series are the same. Another thing that I really liked especially about this particular book, is that in the end, we get told what is happening with the person who committed the crime. In the other two books, we don't really get told what happened to all the people involved in the crimes. I was left wondering, especially in B for Burglar, did any of those people go to jail, did they get off, what happened to them? Nothing was mentioned and that was a little annoying. So I am glad that at the end of C for Corpse, there was a little mention in the epilogue about what happened to the criminals since it brings a little more closure than Kinsey finding out who did it. Overall, 4 out of 5 stars for another interesting mystery.

Do You like book C Is For Corpse (2005)?

This was the first of the "alphabet" books that I read, and I remember vividly staying up until 3 am reading it, and then being unable to sleep! Kinsey's voice and personality really resonated with me, which is pretty disheartening since so many reviewers seem to find her unlikeable. I love Grafton's use of words. I love pretty much everything about her writing style. Her characters are 3-dimensional and quirky. She doesn't "cheat" and pull a killer out of the hat on the second-to-last chapter as so many bigger-name authors do. We nearly always meet Grafton's killers in the first chapter or two. Kinsey is resourceful and smart, kind of like a hard-boiled Nancy Drew. She's also (unlike Nancy) riddled with faults, which is probably why I relate to her so well. I love that she doesn't need a deus ex machina to rescue her... she handles things just fine on her own, thank you very much. I feel oddly protective of her.

This is the third book in the "Alphabet Mystery" series. I have been pretty hard on the last two books. They were weirdly written, poorly characterized (in my opinion), and not well plotted. Does this book change those thoughts?Um, kind-of? I guess. I found this book to be better at hiding the mystery. By that I mean I didn't guess the bad guy five seconds after starting the book. I even liked Kinsey more. She came across better in this book. He internal monologs are still kind of tedious to read about though, since she often focuses on the strangest things. Maybe I have a it of Stockholm Syndrome going on, but I might actually get some other books to see if they get better as they go along. So, all-in-all bot a bad book. I still only think it is worth a 2 (maybe 2 1/2) star rating as i still think its pretty average and not great.

"C" is for Corpse was a really good read. The novel is about a young man named Bobby Callahan who claims someone tried to kill him by running his car off the road into a canyon 400 feet below, which does not kill him but leaves him with scattered bits of the incident and his body covered in scars. With no one believing him and not being able to remember, he eventually hires Kinsey Millhone to help him put the pieces back together. However, things change when three days into the case, Bobby is dead and it is now up to Kinsey alone to find out who his killer is. It is dramatic, yet suspenseful at the same time. One thing that I loved while reading this book was the author's vivid descriptions of the characters and settings. Sue Grafton wrote in a way that made it easy for the readers to envision these characters and the situations that they faced throughout the novel. This book is not written as a typical mystery, Grafton does not just get straight to the point, she lets the readers develop their opinions with different twists and turns in the novel, making the readers believe one thing when it is actually the other, creating the suspense to who was actually Bobby's killer.
