About book Can We Save The Tiger?. Martin Jenkins (2012)

Audience: PrimaryGenre: Non-fiction, animalsFiction twin Text: Adventures of Riley: Tigers in Terai by Amanda Lumry and Laura Hurwitz (2009)"Tigers in Terai" is book #6 in the "Adventures of Riley" series but it can stand alone as its own book. In this book we find Riley on his way to meet Uncle Max in Nepal. They are hoping to spot the Bengal tiger, which is endangered because "they are running out of space to live and need more room to roam." During his journey, Riley spots many other animals like the king cobra, sloth bear, clouded leopard. This book pairs well with "Can We Save the Tiger?" because Jenkins' book is an introduction to endangered species and, according to School Library Journal, "about the thousands of animals in danger of extinction and our responsibility to make changes to save them." "Tigers is Terai" is about trying to find the endangered tiger and a way to help them survive with a fictional spin. Audience: PrimaryGenre: Nonfiction (Animals)Fiction Twin Text: I chose What's the Difference?: An Endangered Animal Subtraction Story. The first thing that drew me to this book is that it includes subtraction problems within the reading, so now it is a cross-curricular book, as well. There is a rhyming feature to engage the students and then a paragraph explaining why one of the twelve animals is/was endangered. It pairs perfectly with Can We Save the Tiger? because both include animals that are/were endangered and both have call to actions. Both books want students to understand the hard work that goes into saving animals, but also shows what happens if we do not save them. I like the varying formats between the two. The nonfiction has beautiful pictures that look like they are saying "save me" paired along with the animal name, where it is found, what it is attacked by, and other information according to its current status of endangerment. The fiction text is poetic and "talks" to the students by asking questions throughout the text. Slade, S. (2010). What's the difference?: An Endangered animal subtraction story. Mount Pleasant, SC: Sylvan Dell Publishing. (The title is italicized, but I am unsure how to do so in this text box.)(The title is italicized, but I was unsure of how to do it in this text box.)
