About book Captain America By Ed Brubaker, Vol. 1 (2011)

This was an interesting Captain America story. It involves his past and is military themed, but involves a character that manipulates reality, and some implications of that. It starts a new story arc that doesn't require a lot of prior knowledge (just about the existence of a few characters), but lays the foundation for some stories in the future. While you can tell they are on the horizon, the story here is pretty well self-contained. This was solid. What you have here is a quintessential meat and potatoes Captain America story, with (arguably) the supporting cast that has always worked best with Steve Rogers - Sharon Carter, Nick Fury and Sam Wilson a.k.a. The Falcon (I loved the 1970s Steve Englehart stories and Brubaker's take on the character encompasses those years to great effect). This five issue collection is fresh and contemporary, and includes some plot elements and a new character that seemed straight out of Alan Moore's late lamented America's Best Comics books. This is a good thing, for even if Cap himself stays the same to a large degree, the stories surrounding him should not and, in this case, do not.

It's good to have Cap back - no one writes Steve better than Brubaker.
