About book Catfish Alley (2011)

Started this book expecting a quick fluffy read. It was Quick, because I couldn't put it down but not the least bit fluffy. Some very serious race issues were dealt with in a way that made you think without being ugly or mean. This would be a good book for junior high student to read with a parent or a high school student to read and discuss. This would be a great addition to a Black History month reading list. I so enjoyed this book. It seems to be following in the footsteps of the many authors jumping on the bandwagon of the success of "The Help" but that's OK. I learn a lot about the South and race relations when I read books like these - mostly because it prompts me to then look things up about the true history of the times. But beyond that, I found this book a real pleasure. I was almost immediately drawn in by the story and I absolutely loved the central characters. They change in ways that are gradual but profound throughout the book. I want to read more from Lynne Bryant - a lot more. This book is much more than a copy-cat, it stands on its own.
