About book Cauldron Of Ghosts Signed Limited Edition (2014)

This companion series to the Honor Harrington books by Mr Weber alone are, to me, what David Weber would still be like if he'd stop indulging his interests in political and military history and got on with writing exciting action-oriented Space Opera. It's no fluke, either - see March Upcountry and sequels co-authored with John Ringo, similarly enjoyable as guilty pulp SF pleasures - and just goes to show what a good (and blunt) editor could do. But that's not a review, sooo...We return to the adventures of Messers Cachat and Zilwicky, a pair of larger than life intelligence agents in the manner of True Lies more than Harry Palmer, and the conspiracies of the Mesan Alignment that are wreaking such havoc in the wider Honorverse and pushing Haven and Manticore into conflict with the Solarian League. In turn, deeper motives and aims are revealed, and the two men manage to throw multiple spanners into various plot-gears to satisfying effect. It's not perfect - suffering, for example, from Weber's increasingly annoying inability to create characters who are just too nice to each other all the time - but compared to some other output (the entire Amargeddon Reef series, for example) it positively zings along, Eric Flint's fingerprints all over this, and in the sly vein of humour running through the story and its various attendant sub-plots. Good clean fun, much like the previous books in the series. Sadly, this is far from Weber's best work. While the story was interesting, the book suffered from over explanation. And was made worse by explaining things that had no bearing on the plot. For example, the 3-4 pages dedicated to how prolong effects married couples. Not even close to a topic of interest that belongs in an action adventure series. The book could have been reduced by 2/3rds and still covered the main story. So while I did enjoy it, there was way to much filler/fluff that made it drag on in many places.
