About book Choices Of One (2011)

There are some things I liked about the book and some I didn'tI liked:-That Mara Jade was there of course :0)-The action sequences are outstanding. I could almost feel parts of blown-up walls and buildings flying all over me through the POV from La Rone and company.-Timothy Zahn's command of the English Language.-The author's preparation before writing the book. He's well known to be a thorough researcher and I appreciate that.I didn't like:-I found that the expanded Universe characters created by Zahn lacked something. I've read five books from him about Star Wars and I always get the impression that characters sucha as Thrawn and Pelleaon seem to know everything all the time, like they're omnipresent, and that spoils the element of surprise. It seems that no matter how smart their opponent is, they're always ahead of the curve. They also lack this emotionality and arrogance from Darth Vader, the Emperor or even Tarkin, this quality that adds a bit of color to their character. It's almost like they're too proper to be the bad guys, too grey. Anyway that's my opinion. Mara Jade got infected with that this time. She seemed a bit dull. I prefered her in Heir to the Empire or in the NJO series. She's my favorite character from all of SW. Luke is a lucky guy ;0)-The book could have been written in 350 pages in my opinion. There were too many characters, too many side stories, and sometimes manyy dialogues that weren't necessary to the progression of the plot IMHO.Nevertheless, I think that Mr. Zahn is a very good writer and should keep on writing for Star Wars and hopefully for other franchises like Terminator, Transformers etc. Zahn on point as usual. You can tell he has a lot of fun with these books and I have a lot of fun reading them. The characters are good and the action is well paced and keeps you going. We even get to hear from Thrawn, Pellaeon, and Mara again, which is always fun. One of the best Star Wars books you're likely to pick up and, of course, there are some good twists coming and throughout the book, things you think you know will get turned around in light of new information. You're really put down on the ground with the characters. One thing I always love about Zahn's writing is his willingness to get you attached to characters on the other side of the fence. The Imperial characters aren't gooney baddies, they're people who usually want to see justice as much as our Rebellion heroes do, though they wish to reform and better the present institution to do so. It's refreshing and shows a good understanding of this kind of political conflict.
