About book Crowfieldska Kliatba (2012)

Az utolsó pár oldal tett kíváncsivá a második rész iránt, el fogom olvasni:) I read this book because during Friday Favourites, a regular book sharing event at school, one young man so enthusiastically reviewed it. I borrowed the book, not expecting to love it, but found that I was completely captivated. Pat Walsh is a new author, and this book was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award, a British literary award for new writers. The year is 1347, and we are introduced to Will, a monks apprentice, who lives in Crowfield Abbey, possibly the coldest, hardest environment both literally and figuratively for a 14 year old to live. But he has no options, since his family, barring an older brother, were all killed in a fire several years ago. Mysteriously, Will was not burned, and because the villagers suspect witchery of some kind, none of them will take him in. At Crowfield Abbey, Will is little more than a slave and life is hard. He has few friends, except for Peter, a simple-minded brother, and Brother Snail, the wise and kindly infirmarer for the Abbey. Will is beautifully drawn. He is sensitive, and thoughtful. He doesn't want adventures, but they find him all the same, and he faces them with real fear, and real determination. He has a very strong ethical cade, that he continues to develop throughout the story. His hardships are plenty, and although he does feel sorry for himself at times, he does not let that rule him. He just knuckles under and gets on with it.Highly recommended, both for the story and the historical elements which are so compellingly and realistically drawn - especially the food! Yuck!
