About book Dark Edge Of Honor (2011)

I liked this. I'm always worried that books like this will be too dark or violent for me, but I thought this one did a good job portraying some of the harsh aspects of war without being completely overwhelming. The world building was fascinating but there were times when I wanted to know more, even if it didn't directly impact the plot or the characters. I was also occasionally confused as to the motivations for some of the characters' actions. I really liked all the characters, especially Mike and Sergei, but the side characters were really interesting as well. The beginning of the book dragged a bit for me because there were too many sex scenes for my personal tastes and I wanted to see Mike and Sergei together doing something besides sex, but the book really picked up after the halfway point. I'd read more about these characters or more set in this world. I switched back and forth between my Kindle and Audible. It took me a bit to get used to Jack LeFleur's narration because he read it in a much stronger accent than I pictured for the Doctrine characters and he put more emotion into it than I had picked up from the text, but once I got used to it I liked it. By the end I think I preferred the audio to the ebook by a small margin. I must be honest...I don't think this book is my kind of read...I would give the first 1/2 of the story 1 star and the second half 3 stars...just because of Nikishin...he saved the book for me! Although I was still at a loss through out most of the book...I can't say it was "bad"...it just didn't flow...so many things were never explained...so many things couldn't be understood...even after re-reading certain sections over and over. I would just start to get little twinges of interest and understanding...and then BAM...things would jump out of context and I was lost again! Would I ever read this book again...NO...but I do intend to give these authors another try...one confusing book does not a judgement make...so I will withhold judgement till later! In the authors defense...I am not a huge fan of sci-fi...so maybe the faults lies with me and my inability to perceive exactly what the authors were trying to relay!
