About book Death Trance (1986)

Well, I guess it had to happen sooner or later. Death Trance was, for me, a bad book. I can't say that it was bad for one main reason or several small ones because it just seemed bad altogether. The only positive thing I can say about it is that it shows, yet again, that Masterton can take on any setting and any story no matter how crazy it sounds. Like a lot of his other work (that I have read anyway), Death Trance involves ancient rituals with dangerous consequences if performed wrong. The main character and plot seem well-done at first, but the book just drags on and on and on and, as if that wasn't clear enough, could have used some serious editing. The plot also has a "Luke, I am your father" moment that was the final turd on the poo cake for me. It wasn't shocking, just ridiculous. Yes, it is horror, and yes, it is violent, and yes, a character does say "I can't make love to you" and is the main, male, character, and no, that isn't directly followed by an over-descriptive sex scene, but these things don't really make it good. I give it two stars instead of one because I respect the author's effort and realize that, at the rate he spews out books, there are going to be some bad ones. I didn't hate it or anything, but I was disappointed and, like high school, am glad it is over.
