About book Deep Freeze (2005)

Jesus holy god this book was painful to read. I don't know what I really expected, and it's my own fault for not being able to quit reading a book once I've started, no matter how awful the writing. It came with a high recommendation. I think I shall ignore further recommendations from this person haha. The story idea is good. Stalker that is making mannequinns out of live people as a shrine to an actress he's obsessed with. It could have been so interesting had it been better played. Like, in the moments where the abducted women awake and realize they're naked in a strange place after being drugged and can't feel their bodies is a GOLDMINE. There is so much potential for an amazing, tense, frightening scene as we are in these women's heads. Instead, the best Jackson offers is, "What kind of sick crap is this?" as an inner monologue. Shit man. What the hell.OH, and if I highlighted every overused disgusting cliche in this book, I'd have more yellow space than white. "Out and out," "hell freezing over," all those ugly little fillers. I wouldn't recommend reading this book EVER but if you must, don't read it while you take a writing class, because all those awful cliches just pop out at you more.Oh, and Jackson spends about 500 pages leading up to the dramatic confrontation between the protagonist and her would-be killer, only to give you a 2 page, scanty little deus-ex-machina resolution. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I know that doesn't sound like a ringing endorsement, but from some of the reviews that I read, I wasn't too thrilled about starting it. First of all, I thought Jenna was really well written, but may have played into the stereotype of being that down to earth famous person. Carter was great and I absolutely loved learning about his background and seeing his interactions with Wes. I only have two complaints. The first, is that the daughter Cassie is INCREDIBLY stupid. I mean beyond normal teenager stupid. I mean, would you go and meet your boyfriend in the middle of the night after your mother just found A FINGER in her bedside table EVEN WITH A BODYGUARD IN THE HOUSE?!I hope the answer to this is a firm no. The second is how little information we're given about the killer, but at the same time that works for the storyline. I would definitely recommend this book, and I will absolutely read Fatal Burn.Note: I found this book to edge more on the thriller side, with a sprinkling of romance. Maybe a dash, but it doesn't overtake the book and make the thriller part a side-story.

Do You like book Deep Freeze (2005)?

You know what really pisses me off? When I love the premise of a book, when the blurb on the cover leads me to believe that I'm in for one sort of story when really I'm in for a basic grocery store romance thriller. What I really really hate is when a book isn't all that good but somehow you have to finish it just to see how things get wrapped up. And, I'm not even sure everything did get wrapped up. There were a couple hints earlier in the novel that I don't think were referred to ever again...or maybe not so much hints as important background about the psychotic. In the end there were just too many writing devices and cliches that made me grind my teeth. No less than four characters were described as having "blue/brown/green eyes that seemed to miss nothing". It's like she found her favorite phrase and couldn't resist driving it into the ground. If she described the lead character as "the lawman" one more time it would have been a world record. And while in real life people do wallow in their miseries constantly, hearing about the lead guy's friend dying every chapter and the lead woman's sister dying every OTHER chapter, in the EXACT SAME WAY made me wonder if I'd misplaced my book mark and I was actually reading the same pages over and over again. This could have been a dark, creepy, bleak stalker/psycho novel but ended up being a Lifetime movie in print.

I've read a few books lately that I've ended up comparing to Lifetime movies, and this is one of them. Light and relaxing, it holds your attention but lacks in true depth or substance. I liked the characters, the small town setting, the snowy winter landscape. However, I found myself only mildly curious about who the killer was - it could have been anyone. At 500 pages I'd say it's about 100 pages too long, although I wouldn't say that it drug on painfully. I'd definitely only recommend this one for reading during the cold winter months when you just want something fun and easy, not too mentally challenging, to curl up with. A small bonus - in the epilogue, it gives a little teaser for the second book in the series, which is kindof cool.
