About book Die Laatste Zomer (2009)

A great read! The first book I have read in a while that I simply could not put down.Antoine decides to plan a surprise getaway to celebrate hiw sister Melanie's 40th birthday. He chooses a desstination they had travelled to as children on holiday with their family: a destination they have not visited since the sudden death of their mother while they were still children. The weekend proves a success, but also awakens memories in both Antoine and Melanie. These memories lead to a long kept family secret.Full of twists and turns and a relevation I completely did not expect, A Secret Kept cannot be kept to myself. I will reccomend it highly. How many significant events can a family experience in a relatively short space of time? Antoine and Melanie, brothet and sister, return to a childhood holiday retreat to celebrate Melanie's 40th. Memories from their childhood past begin to surface and this leads them on to question the sudden death of their mother when they were much younger and their memories were hazy. All this emotion causes Melanie to crash the car during their return home. Recovering from the crash she remembers a secret she had witnessed from her mother's past. This in itself is a very good story line however the author throws into the mix Antoine's broken marriage and difficult relationship with his three children; one of his sons gate crashes a party, gets seriously drunk, causes a great deal of damage and is arrested whilst his daughter's best friend dies from heart failure at school age 14. The theme on death is explored to the latter. While the parents pursue their own sexual interests we meet sexy Angele, a mortician! Oh please! And there's a suicide thrown in too! A reasonable easy read but had I read this book first, I might not have read The House I Loved by the same author, far better written!

C'est lent, pas vraiment savoureux, prévisible, irréaliste, on a connu mieux de cet auteur !

an engaging story that pulls you in from the beginning, but i'm not sure of the staying power.

Blah. Zero climax.
