About book Die Weihnachtskatze: Ein Fall Für Mrs. Murphy (2008)

I only gave this book three stars because it didn't completely turn me off of the series, and my rule is a minimum of three stars if I'll keep reading. That said, I know Ms. Brown has a strong point of view, and although I often disagree with it, it's her book, her podium. However, this time I found some of her viewpoints and statements offensive, and I do not easily get offended when I'm reading fiction. I read and loved Dan Brown's books and other books that painted the Catholic Church in poor light and also attacked the very foundation of Christianity itself. What bothered me was this felt less like a mystery and more like a diatribe against the Catholic Church and religious orders. Regardless of how one feels about the Church, there are still individuals who chose to join religious orders in service of others and devotion to God with no ulterior motive and fight to improve the Church from within. This book felt like an "us vs. them" stereotyping attack, and it really detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I'll keep reading the series, but I really enjoyed the earlier entries more. This book has human characters and cat characters, and it is classified as a "cozy mystery", with good reason. It was festive and fun, and I enjoyed reading about the people and goings-on in the little town. The writing is not good; it has no grace or subtlety, but since the writer didn't seem to aspire to write with either quality, there were no failed attempts or pretensions to cringe through, which would have been a problem. The story and the cozy Christmas factor were charming enough for me to ignore the writing.

The editor failed to keep the characters straight and the last chapters seemed hurried.
