He can see them clearly on every pitch. On their cell phones. Making fools of themselves. The next game someone else showed up and this time they looked right back at him. Right into the camera at Evers. The following game, the next person picked up a phone and dialed. In his condo, all alone, Dean Evers' phone rings.Review - This is Stephen King. Granted a short story version but still this is King. This is the King who wrote Salem's Lot and the Shining. This is the King who handed out terror in buckets but knew when to tone it back and just as slowly slide the unease up on you. Until the room you are in is a little darker and the stillness of the night a little quieter and then come the chills and goosebumps and part of you is really getting creeped out and the other part is happy because goddammit this is King. And nobody does King like Stephen King.This is a short story, an appetizer to remind you how good he is. This is not a romantic kiss that goes on forever, this is the quicker. The rushed press of lips before her parents come to the door when it is all you have and you need to pore all your heat and passion out in that one moment. This is a short story and nobody does it better.Love live the King. Je suis toujours un petit peu réticente à lire des nouvelles, quel qu'en soit l'auteur. Elles ont une fâcheuse tendance à me laisser frustrée, justement à cause de ce format court qui ne satisfait généralement pas ma sensibilité de lectrice. Pas assez de temps pour découvrir les personnages et leur personnalité, pas assez de temps pour s’immerger dans un contexte précis, ou pour ce qui est des littératures de l'imaginaire, dans un univers particulier.Pourtant, suite à sa récente venue en France, Stephen King avait proposé à ses lecteurs une nouvelle intitulée Sale gosse que j'avais plutôt bien aimée. C'est pourquoi, lorsque les éditions Bragelonne ont annoncé, presque au même moment, qu'allait paraître chez elles une autre nouvelle de celui qu'on surnomme régulièrement le « maître de l'horreur », je n'ai pas hésité très longtemps. Un visage dans la foule a été écrite à quatre mains par Stephen King donc, et son ami de longue date, Stewart O'Nan, lui-même auteur de plusieurs thrillers et romans fantastiques. Elle a pour toile de fond un sport méconnu en France, le base-ball, et je dois avouer que certains termes spécifiques me sont passés totalement au-dessus de la tête. Mais ce n'était pas là l'important. Ce qui comptait, c'était l'histoire de ce cher Dean qui s'était mis à voir dans la télé les visages de ses proches décédés, et même à leur parler au téléphone ! Comme souvent chez Stephen King, le fantastique s'immisce brusquement dans la normalité, et c'est ce qui le rend si troublant. Très honnêtement, je n'avais pas deviné où les auteurs voulaient en venir, je m'étais imaginé tout autre chose...Au final, comme je m'y attendais, tout va très vite, un peu trop, j'aurais aimé en apprendre plus sur Dean, un personnage attachant, sa femme, sa maîtresse, son fils, son ancien associé, tous ces personnages que l'on ne fait que croiser de manière trop éphémère, sur leurs destins croisés. C'est une nouvelle que j'ai lue sans déplaisir, mais qui n'aura pas non plus marqué ma mémoire d'une empreinte indélébile, loin de là. J'attends bien mieux de mon auteur préféré !
