About book Elämän Valitusveisu : Karl Pilkingtonin Elämänviisaudet (2014)

This is an oddly satisfying book coming from an odd little man. The book is a companion piece to the travel show he did for Sky 1, which I don't believe has made it across the pond (after "Idiot Abroad"). Along with describing his travels to some pretty remote locations, you also get wonderful bits of Karl-isms: "It would be odd to go out with a twin, as when the other one gets married you would know that their husband also fancies your wife," and "Look at swans...they stick with their partners for life. Saying that, I've always wondered if that's because they all look the same, so there's no point in running off with another swan." Karl Pilkington is hilarious; this is the first time I've read one of his books but it won't be the last. I wonder if his writing is as funny to people who haven't seen his television shows or listened to his podcasts? Because those other mediums show that Karl is not pretending: his more absurd statements are not a gimmick. His fascinating perspectives on life are very genuinely his, a beautiful mix of idiocy and brilliance. The book is written the way he talks. And the way he talks is the way he thinks.I can't decide if he's at his best with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant by his side (whose enjoyment of Karl is infectious), or if he is best when he's adventuring on his own. As other reviewers have pointed out, he certainly seems happier without Ricky and Stephen trying their best to annoy him. This book is travel writing by an interesting person. It's a funny and a quick read, I really enjoyed it.
