About book Emily's Blue Period (2014)

Emily wants to be an artist when she grows up - just like Pablo Picasso! Cathleen Daly's portrayal of Emily, her love of art, and her family life is unique. She ties in information about Picasso with Emily's adjustment to her parents' divorce or separation. I love the illustrations because I pretty much love all illustrations that are pencil and watercolors. A little longer than some picture books, it's still a good one to keep on the radar for parents looking for books about adjusting to a change in family. Emily loves art, but with her father moving out, she has slipped into a "blue period" like Picasso (she has a fascination with the famous artist). Luckily, her art teacher at school assigns the perfect project to push Emily out of that blue period: creating a collage of what "home" means to her. It takes a lot of thinking, but her final definition is just right.I read this today and immediately took it to our STEAM teacher (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math). She took it to read and is thinking of using it the first week of school with 5th graders.

I like the art types covered, but it was a lot of story for a small book.
