About book Escándalo En Escocia (2010)

I wanted to like this book, and I usually enjoy Julia London's books, though I do prefer her contemporary to the historical.Mostly, it just didn't grab me. The hero and heroine were forced into a handfasting (temporary marriage of a year and a day) by her uncle, and it takes far too long before anyone bothers trying to figure out why. The heroine appears to blame the hero more than her uncle, which made her seem fairly dense. The hero, for his part, was coerced because the prince wants to hang him for presumably sleeping with the princess. He repeatedly says he won't be hanged, but doesn't seem inclined to do anything about it.Both characters brooded over their one kiss for chapter after chapter, which got really old. With all these irritations, and the fact that I never developed a connection with either of them, the continual phonetically-spelled Scottishisms drove me up a wall--particularly because it was only a handful of words and they were repeated by every single character. On the plus side, I did enjoy the heroine's sister's secondary romance.... after she quit being so over-the-top unreasonable in her anger at the hero--I'm still not sure why her character wanted him locked in a shed and starved. I'll continue reading this author's books, but I'm not going to search for others in this series. I don't know what people's problems are with this book. I've looked at some of the reviews here, and feel as though others must have read an entirely different book from the one I did. It was great. Really, really great and warm and loving. Yes, it was in the tradition of all those tales wherein a group of people are thrown together, detest each other and then grow to be each others biggest fans after a remarkably fortuitous shift in the social circle, but who cares? Julia London did it well, with almost cinematic descriptions, or at least highly visual ones that I could see a director thanking her for if a movie were ever made. There's enough in life to moan about. Why moan about a genuinely good book? Sorry. I have no patience for silly criticisms.

Enjoyable historical romance. Interestingly enough it is based on historical facts.
