About book Ex Machina, Vol. 9: Ring Out The Old (2010)

Starts off with a well done meta issue featuring Brian K. Vaughan and artist Tony Harris meeting with character Mitchell Hundred to do a comic bio of him. They didn't get the job. Then we get up to the beginning of the end as Hundred--and NYC--faces his greatest threat yet. This decidedly "realistic" series takes a definite turn into the fantastic. This volume does its job in setting up the ultimate chapter even if I'm not quite sure it's the right direction for the story. This is exactly why, once I start reading, I usually try to push myself to finish the story. Some things that don't seem to be working can come together at the end--although, since I've still got Vol. 10 to go, no guarantees as of yet. As a series, Ex Machina got a bit too bogged down in political minutiae in the middle for my tastes (and this from someone who does keep up with politics). But with Vol. 9 I'm now seeing the overriding arc of the story, and it's really got a head of steam, and big questions to be answered, coming into the final volume.

And everything begins to come together. A very satisfying volume, setting up the end.

Spannend, meta, closer to the origin and the end, mayor/president/hero?
