Exploring J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit (2012)

About book: I love Corey Olsen, and listen to his podcast, "The Tolkien Professor." If you want to explore intricacies of Tolkien's writings, read this book. I also wanted to read it to remember the book "The Hobbit" in advance of the final (third) movie coming out this fall. Although the movie doesn't follow the story line exactly, it is interesting to see what Peter Jackson & Co derived from the book to make their fun movies. Olsen teaches me that the extraordinary strokes of luck in the story are not weaknesses, but rather a deliberate theme. Bilbo has a destiny. Olsen provides textual evidence in the changes from the first draft to the published version. In the draft, Bilbo uses his wits to find the dwarves when they have been captured by spiders, and to ensure he can find the path again afterward. In the final version, this has been removed, and luck put in its place. To riff on Olsen's development of the theme a bit - we see this destiny mainly in its impact on Bilbo, but Bilbo is also an instrument of Destiny's larger plans - the death of Smaug, for starters; and the bringing together of elves, dwarves, and men in a great alliance to defeat the goblin horde. Olsen carefully exposes a great deal of craftsmanship that has gone into the writing of The Hobbit, making it a perfect little story. I am surprised that Olsen is so forgiving of Peter Jackson's changes.
