I picked this book based on what the librarian would think I like. I told her that I really liked the hunger games and she brought me this book. The setting of the book takes place on an island. The character Carl is basically facing a really messed up group of people. The main leader likes him, but one of the sergeants wants him dead. The character is a dynamic character. Three character traits could be strong, loyal, and humble. One of the quotes would be..."I will never give in to him" (123) Dixon. The theme of the story is no matter your odds don't give in to the evil people. I thought that the book was good because it was full of adventure and you could never really trust anyone. Right when you thought that a character could be trusted turned out they were on the wrong side. John Dixon creates a potentially great concept, but ruins it by throwing in an unrealistic bf/gf relationship, and makes the main character extremely predictable by keeping his intentions the same throughout the book. It reminds me of another book series (Lockdown, Solitary, Death Sentence, Fugitives, and Execution) and nearly duplicated the plot and events in the story with a much less atmospheric effect. I appreciated the bow to boxing and mma techniques, which are accurate and detailed, but other than that, it failed to meet my expectations.
