About book Girls On The Edge: The Four Factors Driving The New Crisis For Girls�Sexual Identity, The Cyberbubble, Obsessions, Environmental Toxins (2010)
Complementary to Boys Adrift (also by Leonard Sax), this tackles the challenges that girls face in our modern culture and educational system and what we can do about it. As the father of 4 girls this is a topic of great interest to me. I didn't connect with this one quite as much as Boys Adrift though and I suspect that its because, as a man, I didn't have the degree of personal experience to bring to the table as I did with Boys Adrift. This was a frightening book about some of the challenges that girls face in our modern society and some of the pitfalls they can fall into. Like his other book, Boys Adrift, I though Leonard Sax had some interesting insights and warnings that parents should look for in their children. A lot of it boiled down to the need to help your daughter develop a full, deep sense of self so that she won't spend her adolescence "performing" for others or living in a very shallow and unfulfilling way. He argues that this leads to obsessions, depression, pathology, and looking for fulfillment with sex and the portrayal an unrealistic "fun-girl" image. We talked more about the Boys Adrift book in our book club, but this one was also very interesting, motivating, and as I said before, scary.
