About book Granny Dan (2015)

I guess we all know that Danielle Steel is not one of the best authors around, a lot of her books are very cheesy, not very original and predictable, but she also wrote a few nice ones. This is not one of my favorites, but it's a nice and easy read and I like ballerinas and a good love story. My actual rating is 3,5 stars. After Danina's death her grand-daughter discovers that her grand-mother was once a very talented young ballet dancer who fell in love with the much older and married Nicolaj who was one of the private doctors of the Romanov (royal) family. Danina and Nicolaj fight for their love and just when it seems that they have overcome all obstacles, the revolution strikes and everybody who has a connection with the Romanov family is in danger. They have to go seperate ways with the promise of a mutual future in the United States of America.I loved to read about Danina's life as a ballet dancer, she is a very realistic and likable character and her love story with Nicolaj was sweet and interesting enough to keep me entertained and reading.Lesson learned: Old people were once young too and have a story to tell. I wish I had had the chance to talk with my grand-parents about the time that they were young.

Granny Dan had been a ballet star in Russia. She lost her mother at a young age. Her dad was in the army along with her 4 brothers. Her dad had no idea what to do with a little girl. After 2 years of having someone take care of her, he took her to Madame Markova's where she would learn ballet. She learned to dance and pushed herself very hard to make Madame Markova proud of her.She became sick with the flu. She had been asked by the czar to come to a house on their property and recover. This is where she fell in love with Nikolai. He was the doctor taking care of her.She went back to dance, working harder than she had before she became sick. Eventually, she fell and broke her ankle. She was unable to dance anymore.Nikolai talked her into going to Vermont to stay with his cousin until he could get there. This cousin was Granny Dan's husband. She had put in a box her ballet shoes, her locket with Nikolai's picture, and her letters. This box was sent from the nursing home.

This was a sweet short story about a young woman who loses her grandma. She had a close relationship with her grandma but she finds out things she never knew about her. After her grandmother dies, the nursing home gives the young woman a box of mementos that were in the closet. In this box she finds ballet slippers, and live notes tied in a bundle along with other special trinkets and mementos. As she reads these letters she discovers that grandma was once a well known ballerina in Moscow and that she once was in love with someone else other than her grandfather. She never thought of grandma as once being young and in love she just always thought of her being old and only with grandpa. This story has many peaks and valleys. Just when you think there will be a happily ever after something else happens. Just as it happens in real life, things don't stay easy or good for long, something always comes along to mess it up. You have to take the bad with the good and move forward.A very nice heartwarming story to remind us all that grandma and grandpa were once young as well. They did the same things we did as kids or young adults even though it is hard to imagine.
