About book Halo: Ghosts Of Onyx (2007)

In the mid 26th century human expansion has reach the outer galaxy but with large expanse of human colonization there was a need for order and control of the other colonies so the UNSC (United Nations Space Command) was born. But at first the UNSC was used to destroy rebel groups trying to control the outer colonies but from the edges of the galaxy a new greater enemy has arrived. As the UNSC tries to scramble their fleet to faces the new enemy, which calls themselves the Covent a mixture of different kinds of alien races of all with the single reaching the great journey, which is still unclear to the human. As the UNSC try to scramble their fleet to face this new enemy the outer columns are being ravaged and Glassed by the covenant fleet by the time you UNSC assembled its fleet almost all of the outer colonies have been destroyed. The UNSC fleet loses most battles face head-to-head against a covenant fleet and the situation becomes dire because the covenant fleet has reached the inner colonies but are still unaware of Earth because of the Cole protocol, which is a safety protocol that every UNSC ship has to abide by failure to do so means compromising of Earth location, which is when the ship has to self-destruct before the enemy can capture the ship. ONI (Office of Navel Intelligence) a section of the UNSC is developing a group of super soldiers called Spartan II as a last ditch effort to fight the covenant, the first deployment of the Spartan II against a covenant proved that the Spartan can turn the War around so the UNSC creates more which are called Spartan III but have to be created in secret because of the augmentation that they do to very young children to become super soldiers which is not very accepted even given the circumstances. The Spartan III has to be trained in a desolate planet called Onyx deep in the Outer colonies. A Spartan II named Kurt who trains him at a very young age on how to become super soldiers trains them on this lonely outpost which little is know of the planet because they lost the outer colonies very early in the war. After months of training Spartan III go on their first mission to destroy a covenant refinery but after the destruction of the refinery on the planet Pegasi Delta But after the mission was completed the covenant glass the planet with most of the Spartan III still on the planet only a few return to the planet on Onyx to train the next batch of Spartans. As training begins with the next Spartans a few being to disappear in the restricted area, which is unexplored land, when the rest of the Spartan III and the Spartan II named Kurt go to investigate then something activates within the planet a bunch of robots called sentinels attacked the group and they have to flee with in the planet. As they flee from the sentinels they realize that there in a in a underground fortress which was created by an ancient race way before that humans or the covenants and realize that they are in a planet size fallout shelter as they realize they have to go deeper inside planet to escape.Books like these that have their own universe let the reader imagine how the future would be like 500 years from now as this book describes, it lets the reader imagine these future great battles between alien technology and future human technology. It also lets the reader see how meeting extraterrestrial life might not be a good thing for humans after and might even lead to our own destruction. I like how the human weaponry and technology has not really advanced to plasma energy and time travel they are still limited to engines and we still use bullets. Also it gives the reader an idea on how expanses humans can still be limited to what we are limited to today. The Book also this tells us that the larger the civilization is the harder it is to control and to maintain and the results of failure to maintain control is rouge planets which are possibly against the inner colonies because of feeling abandoned by the inner colonies.Things I did not like a book about the book were that the book didn’t really go deep into who were the ancient race that created a whole planet and there was no remnant of them. Another problem I faced was how the settlers did not just find any evidence of the ancient races structures or even their robots. Throughout the book humans still use bullets and covenants use these advanced plasma weaponry with shields but still humans are capable of killing these aliens who clearly are more advance. Also why did it take over 500 years to find a new alien species and how was it capable that they could communicate without them knowing of their existence until moments of first contact. Those are some things that I did not like about the book also things that needed more explanation.I would totally recommend this to any reader who likes things about the future and also extraterrestrial life and how we interact with them. I would recommend this to anyone who likes books with a little action in them this book contains a lot of battles and Fleet battles in space. I would also recommend this book to someone who has a great imagination because this book describes things in great detail and lets the readers mind wander into a whole new universe in the future. Also this book is a great about explaining the early universe and how humans are the way they are, so if people are into origin stories this book contains some great origins stories about the early universe and how life was scared throughout the universe. Overall this book was a great read I would recommend this to anyone who has free time and a little imagination.

I read the book, "Halo: Ghosts of Onyx" by Eric Nylumd. I am a huge follower of the Halo universe and have been since I was 6 years old. I read this book because I wanted to learn more about Dr. Halsey, who although is not the main character of the book, she is a very important figure with a immense history. This is a college level book so it wasn't a cake walk but since I love the Halo books I pushed through and found that reading it was very enjoyable. The book takes place around the year 2552. It starts off with a covert spartan III mission on a moon barely outside of UNSC territory. The Spartans, only 12 years old at the time, find out that the mission is a trap as 5 cruisers appear from slip space. Although the mission was accomplished it killed all but 2 of the Spartans, Tom 292 and Lucy 091. The prologue is action packed, Eric Nylund's writing foreshadows the excitement yet to come in the following sections of the book. In the books next section there is the introduction of John 117 and the soon to be main character Kurt 051. John and Kurt barely escape from the mission to obtain stolen UNSC nuclear warheads from rebel forces, but were able to gather Intel from the rebel general which leads to the creation of the Spartan III program. Colonel Ackerson puts Kurt in charge of leading the spartan IIIs on the forerunner built shield world of Onyx. Kurt's spartan IIIs become known as "Gamma Company". Then in a big plot twist a training exercise goes wrong as they are attacked by powerful forerunner sentinels and discover that the planet is made up of these sentinels. They were in a neutral standby mode but were awoken by distress signals sent from Installation 05 (the fifth halo ring) caused by John and Cortana. Dr. Halsey's Pelican is hit by the beams of the sentinels and crash lands on Onyx. How will Dr. Halsey and Gamma Company find a way to battle off the sentinels and escape onyx in one piece? Find out in "Halo: Ghosts of Onyx"!

Do You like book Halo: Ghosts Of Onyx (2007)?

Ghosts of Onyx is a bit of a return to form for Nylund. I found the characterisation in Halo: First Strike a bit tepid, especially that of Spartan John-117 (Master Chief). Ghosts is reminiscent of Halo: The Fall of Reach in some aspects, notably the training of a new generation of Spartans. The book also dispenses with featuring Master Chief as the protagonist. It’s a fairly solid novel, and a continuation of the Halo story-line, albeit parallel to the arc featuring Master Chief.I suppose it has always been the intention that the novels serve as a supplement to the game, and that becomes apparent here. There are sequences where the Covenant are being fought on Earth, but I can’t seem to recall any real back story as to how they got there (I was under the impression that their efforts were thwarted in First Strike). Turns out it isn’t the same Prophet (or San ‘Shyuum) as the one responsible for the threat to Earth in First Strike, and that most of the events leading up to this scenario was dealt with in the second Halo game, in conjunction with the previous novels. The same applies to the events depicted here concerning the Great Schism and the subsequent fall-out between the Sangheili and the Jiralhanae. This is only a problem if, like me, you are reading the novels but not playing the game. And if, like me, you let too much time pass between reading them. The best way to read these books is probably in rapid succession, unless you have an eidetic memory.I take note of the reviewers who dismiss this as derivative tie-in fiction. They’re not wrong, although I disagree with some of the negative feedback. A lot of thought has gone into fleshing out the Halo universe, and if you can suspend disbelief for a time there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to enjoy this. Bear in mind, though, it wouldn’t be completely inaccurate to label this as Young Adult Military Science Fiction. Also, I refuse to believe that an author like Greg Bear would associate himself with sub-standard derivative fiction (see Halo: Cryptum). I will agree that there isn’t a lot of tactical consideration given to military engagements and that most of the action consists of Spartans wading in with all guns blazing and slaughtering Covenant by the dozen (this, fortunately, has been toned down in this novel to make room for fleet engagements, which is a welcome reprieve). The Forerunner technology on display showcases quite a few of the ol’ Sci-Fi conventions, such as artificial planets, Dyson Spheres and, most obviously, the Halo structures (on loan from Ringworld – although Larry Niven’s structure is much larger) so there are some sense-of-wonder moments as well.In conclusion: despite its shortcomings, Ghosts of Onyx is one of the better Halo instalments and actually quite a bit of fun. Also: the novel introduces SPI (Semi-Powered Infiltration) armour in addition to the MJOLNIR armour.

I give this book five stars because i really like the halo story line and the books story continues off of the game. The story is about a couple of Spartans that are left from the spartan II program that lost many of there friends fighting off thousands of covenant. But the UNSC needs a hundred more Spartans to fight the covenant. So the UNSC raises these kids to be disciplined and strong but they are fed steroids and other growth boosters so they could grow faster. The UNSC go to this planet called Onyx to start there training but an older spartan called Master Chief triggers a Halo ring. Which can cause destruction on a massive scale. The Halo ring awakes ancient forerunners which no one new about and they have very powerful technology. So if the humans can get a hold of the technology, it could mean a change in the war but the forerunners have there own plans for destroying both the humans and covenant. The game Halo 4 you can actually play the story out.

I think this book was very great and also unique when compared to the other books in the series. The largest reason why it's unique is because John (Master Chief) is not the main character. Instead, another spartan, Kurt, took the main character role. This did create a different story line about how Kurt's death was faked so that he can train the next line of Spartans. This was a well written story just as the previous books were. The only thing I wish is that the books were all written and created in chronological order. But overall, I recommend this book to anyone that likes fiction books that are full of action.
