Book didn't really start out "slow" but there was a stage early on that took some effort to get into. After that, the pages flowed. Dog gone good read and that's why we're here... right?This book is exactly what one should expect from a military author. Good on action, high on detail, moments of realized mortality, and breaths of relief. All tightly wound and presented in a competent, straight-forward manner.Characters are likeable and believable. This ain't you're superhuman, trudge-forward regardless of damage type hero. Plans are made and flexed as the action dictates. Mistakes get made, fate intervenes and the characters respond with frailty and failure mixed in with heroism, glee, and relief.Having said that... Pretty standard thriller/suspense fare delivered in an engrossing package. Solid four stars and will eagerly track down the next book in the series. The series was characterized as up there with Flynn and Thor. That's a pretty high bar to reach. I didn't think it came close that league.Book started out okay but then seemed to fall apart with an improbable plot and dry, stereotypical characters. While Pike was multi-dimensional in that he had his share of personal problems, I never felt I got to know him. I didn't like all the nicknames. Just seemed really artificial, and another way of being removed from the character itself. The writing and dialog were choppy. On the positive side, the author has great knowledge of his subject matter and was able to bring a great deal of realism to the story. It just wasn't enough to pull it together for me. Taylor appears to have had a great military career, but his first novel shows that he has a ways to go in this career. Perhaps at some time I'll read another as he seems to improve.
