About book Havana Storm (2014)

Dirk, Al, Summer, and Dirk Jr are back together. But when are the Messers Cussler going to turn over the keys full time, so to speak, to Summer and Dirk Jr? Seems like Dirk was able to quickly ditch his responsibilities as head of NUMA to run of to the Caribbean. It's as if he can bolt any time he wants to get back to the field. Did Sandecker ever do that? If Dirk and Summer are to help prolong the series, Dirk and Al need to be sidelined more. Treasure and environmental disaster play a role here. Mercury plumes are creating dead spots in the Caribbean but what's causing them? That's what starts the adventure. While this is going on Dirk Jr and Summer are diving in a cenote in Mexico and of course turn up the lead on a treasure that is conveniently linked with all that's going on with the mercury plumes. Some would be embarrassed by such coincidence but not the Cusslers. But hey, we're used to that with them and, after more than 40 books either you get tired of it and stop reading or just accept it. The books are fun vacation reading, move along good, and sometimes keep me up until early in the a.m. to finish them. Mindless adventure and entertainment is all we can hope for sometimes. I'm a fan of Clive Cusslers and have been since the days of Pacific Vortex and Raise the Titanic. I even liked the movie, tho many didn't. Sahara the movie with MacGarnagle and that little bloke who thinks he's Michael J Fox sucked tho.Havana Storm is Dirk Pitt's 23rd adventure, and like all of us Dirk is getting older. His kids are causing just as much trouble as he did in his younger day. The action comes hard and fast, and just like the old days, Dirk and his mate Al get there just in time. Plus - as seems to be an every book thing lately - the author makes a very brief cameo with just a hint of exposition that helps out in the long run. The Pitt's et al (see what I did there?) find the treasure, save everybody (almost anyway) and find the treasure. And that's the problem. After all these years, after so many spectacular adventures that had me awake nights trying to finish the book, they have become predictable. There's a few lil things in there, but you know what's coming, and worse, you seem to know when it's coming. No, I did not say formulaic.I will always read Clive, because his work is fun. It's boys fun: guns and bombs and blowing shit up with pirates and treasure, but that thrill is starting to wane. Makes me sad, but in truth I still pushed thru it in four days rather than poke thru. I still had to race thru to the end, even tho I'd guessed ot way earlier.I liked it a lot, just not 5 stars worth.GoodRead
