About book Head Shy (2011)

The wonderful thing about these novellas in the 'Dark Horse' series is being able to get more background and understanding of these characters. I've already seen a glimpse into Dan's horrific and traumatic childhood. Here, in 'Head Shy', the author gives not just me, but Evan and Jeff too, some insight into Dan's fears. Actually, in trying to understand Dan, all three guys reveal stories and secrets, that help to understand each of them. But, by far, Dan has the most issues, and the most difficulty allowing himself to be vulnerable, even with these two men he loves.Evan takes Jeff, Dan, and Chris to a 49'ers game, and, of course, the company has a box. Dan is surprised by the number of employees who are there, and he reverts to the "mask" he used to wear all the time before Justin. It really throws Evan and Jeff, and gives them another view into what makes their lover tick. But Jeff and Evan, being who they are, can't leave it alone. They need to know the things that hurt Dan in the past, and that continue to drag over into his, and their, present. Easier said then done, though, getting Dan to share his thoughts and feelings. One of the best parts of this short was Chris and his contributions to a lot of these conversations. Chris and Dan have a great friendship, and Chris is able to push and beg Dan to get answers, where the other guys are hesitant to be that forceful. Of course, this short also gave me an idea of where Chris's head is concerning gay relationships and gay sex. Looking forward to reading that!Great addition, Kate, and, as always, thank you. I just found this story incredibly cute. I loved that Chris had such a strong presence in this book to help Dan get over his fears just as much as the boys were there to help him in other ways. This short story was filled with witty dialogue and some tender moments. I can't get enough of Jeff he is by far my favorite character in the series. I'm already starting to worry about what I'll do when I finish all these short stories!
