About book I So Don't Do Makeup (2010)

The third in Summy's I So Don't Do series, Sherry Holmes Baldwin must solve the case of the messed up make-up! After Sherry and her friends have a glitz-and-glam sleepover, they wake up with puffy and burning faces. Detective Sherry takes it upon herself to figure out who is tampering with the Naked Makeup at the mall kiosk. With the help of her ghost mother and grandfather, Sherry cracks the case, but not without a few sacrifices along the way...as in going makeup-less for days! This is a fun, contemporary mystery with a smart but stylish main character. I haven't read any of Summy's other books so the whole my-mom-is-a-ghost-detective thing kind of threw me through a loop at the beginning. This is a great read for a modern chic chick. Rating: 3.5/5 StarsAbout the Book: Sherlock (Sherry) Holmes is on the case again! Someone is out to sabatoge the new makeup kiosk in the mall, Naked Makeup. When Sherry and her friends use the makeup, it burns their skin and now they're saying they so don't do makeup-and Sherry's not going to let that happen! Is it the competing vendor who wants Naked Makeup's prime kiosk space, the Janes, a group of girls who refuse to wear makeup, or Drew, the lovesick co-worker? If anyone can save Naked Makeup, it's Sherry!GreenBeanTeenQueen Says: This book was just too cute!! I loved that Sherry wasn't perfect (like Nancy Drew) and she was very spunky and fun. She has the perfect tween voice-she's 13, but wishes she was older and I could see the tweens I work with at the library in Sherry. Also, I love that it's a mystery series, as mysteries seem to be really popular with this age group and I can never find enough good ones! While this is the third in the series, there's plenty of catching up and enough back story that the reader can jump right in and not feel lost. This is great when you don't always have the first of a series on the shelf at the library. The mystery was pretty easy to figure out, although maybe that's my adult reader coming into play. Because I had the mystery figured out early on, I got frustrated with the author for leading the characters on wild goose chases. It seemed like the book was longer than it needed to be with one too many suspects to investigate and too much going on. Some readers might find this annoying, but many I suppose will laugh along with Sherry's antics. Sherry reminds me a bit of an updated Nancy Drew and she has plenty of spunk and sass that tweens will love her. If you have Nancy Drew fans or readers who have read through the Sammy Keyes series, I would suggest Sherry Holmes as a new tween detective.
