About book If I Can't Have You: Susan Powell, Her Mysterious Disappearance, And The Murder Of Her Children (2014)

I followed the Susan Powell case from the beginning to its horrific conclusion but I learned a lot more after reading this book. The death of Susan Powell's two children didn't have to happen. There appeared to be enough information to have prevented Josh Powell from having custody of those two boys. The warnings were there and I feel so sad for the Powell family. Josh was a creep and a pervert just like his dad as well as a murderer. A surprisingly well-written summation of the Powell disappearance in Utah and the subsequent suicide/murder in Washington state. Many true crime books feel sloppily put together, but I didn't get that feel from this one.I had followed this case quite closely, but it gave me a little bit of closure to read about it in one fell swoop. The authors availed themselves of the records released by the West Valley City Police Department and were able to add some details that I was not aware of.The book is definitely not unbiased or objective and because Susan is still missing, the story is open-ended with just the author's theories as to what really happened. It is such a sad story and I can't help but wonder what might have happened had Josh actually been arrested -- even without a body and mostly circumstantial evidence. The outcome for the boys might have been different. Or not, considering the dysfunction in the Powell family. Why do people do what they do? 'Tis a fascinating question. An intense read.

This is a tragic tale, from the moment Susan marries Josh to the moment he kills her children.

Such a horrific and sad story. Like Gregg Olsen's books, and this was well-written.
