About book I'm A Shark (2011)

Shark by Bob Shea is a very unique and interesting story. It is about a shark who claims everything is scared of him and he is awesome. The first couple of pages are very funny in the illustrations, which I will talk about later in this review. As the book goes on, a little crab comes into the story and starts to ask the shark what he is afraid of. The shark says he isn't scared of anything, everything is scared of him, but the crab finds out that there is one little tiny insect that frightens the shark beyond belief: a spider. Just the thought of a huge scary shark being afraid of a little spider is comedic in itself, and with the silly dialogue that happens between the characters, the humor in this book kept me laughing from beginning to end. The simple, childish illustrations in this book are really cute and fun. They add to the overall feeling of humor throughout this book. As a human reading this book, it is funny to see what the sharks description of a scary movie is: a boy fishing in the ocean. This page made me laugh so hard and by the second page, I knew that I was gonna like this book. The dialogue that happens between the shark and the creatures that afraid of him happen in little chat bubbles, which I thought was very cool because. Also, the way that the author utilized different styles and colors of text to portray a specific feeling within the reader. For example, the little crabs commentary is in small letters, while the big shark's is in black, bold text. I think that overall, this book definitely deserves a 5/5 because of the creativity and the humor that it encompasses. I didn't like this book. I can tell that Mr. Shea has quite a following, but I wonder if they are mostly adults who can appreciate his humor. The storyline is hard to follow, and there were big question mark looks all over the kids' faces when I read it. If it were acted out, it might be different...I like the idea of a shark having some fears, and I also like the idea of the shark sharing ideas of how to be brave--but the themes get lost in the sarcasm and silliness...
