I always love finding a smart historical romance, and this one definitely was. The twisty plot was well thought-out and suspenseful. Loved the use of India, both as an early backdrop and part of the mystery that was unfolding. Also, props for the deft portrayal of the nobility's attitude towards India and its natives, including Ben and his in-between status.Sometimes I didn't feel connected to what Octavia was thinking or doing. Something she would think felt out of left field for my understanding of her character, but on the whole, it was a minor issue. H/H fall in love meeting in India when young but hero has to sacrifice their love due to duty & her family (a nasty aunt) disapproval. Heroine is heartbroken but they both stay in love with each other. It's wonderfully romantic they things they do in the 7yrs they are apart. The story continues 7 yrs later when they meet again in England.The writing is wonderfully romantic (some parts made me melt) & both H/H are wonderful characters but I can't figure out why I wasn't totally enamored with the book. I think it was the "mysterious plot" of the heroes life ? that perhaps distracted a bit.
