About book It's Not Luck (2002)

Eliyahu M Holdratt comes up with innovative business strategies through his book "It's not luck". UniCo goes for a shift in its policy and decides to sell the non-core businesses. Unfortunately, Alex Rogo's companies dealing with printer, cosmetics and pressure pump industries have to be sold. Rogo has to ensure a good deal for all these companies and being an empathetic superior Rogo also wants to ensure that the jobs of the employees remain intact. All the three businesses have their own set of challenges and Rogo has limited time and no investment to turn the loss making units to a gold mine. Here comes his skill to identify the UDEs (UnDesirable Effects), formulate Current and Future Reality Tree. Many times constructing these diagrams helps Rogo to visual a clearer and sharper image of the issues faced by the business and ways to challenge and change the business offering without any substantial investment.Well, the last two chapter of the book moves into a newer issue- what is the right kind of business expansion strategy? Here also Rogo manages to convince his bosses that business has three prime objectives to fulfill:1. To make money now and in future2. To provide a secure and satisfying environment to employees now and in the future3. To provide satisfaction to the market now and in the futureRogo goes ahead to explain the merits of running business with these three fundamental goals and then comes up with a business expansion strategy that he feels appropriate.Like Goal, It's Not Luck (Goal 2 in India) is a smooth and engaging read. You read a novel that sharpen your understanding of business- marketing, operations, people management and business strategy. A must read for managers and corporate leaders.

I recommend reading "The Goal" first. This book is a follow on to "The Goal" with some of the same characters. "The Goal" is about the Theory of Constraints and uses a unique approach for discovering "The Goal". Unlike, Goldratt's other follow on book called "Critical Chain", "It's not Luck" is not a rehash of the Theory of Constraints applied to some new problem. Instead it revisits the unique approach used to discover/appreciate the root of a problem. So this book is about the art of defining a problem, finding the root cause and how to choose appropriate things to measure and improve on.The techniques emphasized in "It's not luck" are useful... but in practice they are an art to master and apply.

Alex Rogo continues doing miracles at UniCo. In this installment he turns 3 companies in his diversified group from "bottomless pits" into highly profitable businesses and role models in their respective industries.Through Alex' story Dr. Goldratt introduces the concept of the market perception of value and the ToC thinking processes: construction of the conflict cloud, the current and the future reality trees. He also develops generic win-win marketing strategy and outlines the foundation of the company wide strategy.

The story is great--good characters and situations that made me eager to see how it turned out. And the ideas--the thinking process and the business strategies that the protagonist uses to solve his problems--are among the best I've ever heard. Example: solve root problems for customers rather than symptoms--and then he demonstrates a thinking process for knowing which are the root problems. For anyone who wants to know how to solve seemingly impossible problems this is a great read. And if you're in business or leadership this is a must read. It's going on my book recommendations list for sure.
