The book was entertaining and would be appealing to tweens that like adventure series or scientific/environmental themes. Interesting crew on the ship, requisite evil mega-billionaire, undercover genius, nefarious henchmen...everything except an ending. I don't mind series. I like seeing my favorites come back again and again. My literary pet peeve, however, is an inability to end a book. This 'I'll make the ending part of the next book so readers will need to buy it to find out how it ended' gambit is annoying. Loss of two stars for writing 90% of a book and then quitting. This was a refreshing sequel because it is the first one I have read in a long time that has lived up to the original book in the series. Marty and his twin-sister-turned-cousin Grace are back for another adventure with their uncle/father Travis Wolfe. Wolfe has a plan to head out into the deep trenches of the Pacific Ocean to capture a giant squid. The group is joined by the fun cast of characters made up of both allies and foes. A nice addition to the cast is Luther, Marty's best friend from school. Luther is along for the summer.The biggest challenge is in the form of Butch, the lead henchman of Dr. Blackwood (Grace's grandfather). Both are returning from the previous title. Blackwood is out to get Grace and the two tiny dinosaurs that were the result of events in the first book, and he has sent Butch aboard Wolfe's ship as a stowaway to try and arrange things so Blackwood gets everything he wants and Wolfe and his partner's business are destroyed.Like the first book in the series, this one introduces the cryptid in question and makes sure that readers are aware of how they likely live while setting it against the backdrop of a strong adventure tale. I will admit that it does require the reader to dispend belief ,but it is a kid/tween book so I am ok with that.The book does end in a way that makes it clear that there will be a sequel, but the main plotline is totally tied up. I thought it was a fun read, and I can't wait for the next book in the series, which is entitled "Chupacabra" comes in for me at work!
