About book Kaleidoscope Eyes (2009)

Delightful story of 3 tween'agers, in the late 1960s, discovering buried pirate treasure. But it is way more than a cute story of kids on a summer adventure, because of so many interesting cultural references (Janis Joplin, peace marches), huge moments in history (the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.), and deeply moving national events made personal (local boys drafted and disappearing in Vietnam)- all seen through the eyes of an 8th grader. Loved it. A really awesome storyline, and the writing was great. I gave this book a 4/5 because it is written in a poetic format (not meaning all the words rhyme), so the words slant as you read down the page and it is kind of annoying. However the story was very interesting and fun, and the descriptive details are amazing. It is based in the 70s, so you hear some funny quotes about Janice Joplin and bell bottoms, which is funny. I would totally recommend it, very kid friendly book.
