About book Kenny & The Dragon (2008)

Third grade readaloud - this book was a BIG hit with my students. Some of the vocabulary went over their heads, but they were so captivated by the story! Every time I had to stop reading for the day I was met with a collective, "NOOOOO! ONE MORE CHAPTER, PLEASE!" And once they found out the school library had a copy available, they were fighting over who got to check it out so they could read along with me (or race to finish it so that they could lord it over their classmates' heads that they knew how it was going to end). There is a bit of violence (talk of killing dragons, swords, pitchforks, etc.) but ultimately this is a story with plenty of humor and heart - about not judging people (or dragons) before getting to know them, friendship, and being yourself. A modern (yet not) re-telling of David and Goliath, I read this book in less than a day because I enjoyed reading it so much. I MUST have this on my Children's Classics book shelves. My only criticism is that the character of Charlotte was so minor when it neednt've been, and only served the purpose as a sweet, love-interest for Kenny. That being said, I understand that this is a buddy story about a very intelligent boy who wants to prove that things aren't always what they seem to be, especially as they might be negatively portrayed in books and folklore. I read this partially to find out if I would enjoy Tony DiTerlizzi's writing before delving into "The Spiderwick Chronicles". Suffice it to say, I am REALLY excited to begin the series :)
