About book La Folie De La Petite Sirène (2011)

Such a fun book! Leaps and bounds better than the first in the Princess series. Hines has really developed the characters and made them interesting and complicated. The princesses are badass and flawed. Talia's love story isn't a trite maneuver to win some cheap points, but a compelling plot line that makes her amazingly relatable. And I loved getting more background on Snow and Talia.Loved that the mad mermaid's name is a play on the Disney princess, Ariel. But the air spirits - so annoying!Looking forward to meeting Red Riding Hood! I enjoyed the first book, but felt that it never quite lived up to its potential. This one was much better. It's darker and seemed less about all the shiny worldbuilding and more focused on the plot. And I love Snow in this one. In the first book she seemed kind of ditzy, but in this book we actually get some scenes from her point of view, and she's a much more complex character. Although this book doesn't seem to have one main character, Snow is the one who gets the most character development. This book seemed more adult, as well. As might be expected for a book where Snow takes on a bigger role, it's is a lot sexier than the first. There's a ton of innuendo, and an undine orgy which somehow manages to not be explicit. It didn't seem gratuitous at all -- it fit the story. The villains here are another big improvement. They're not just evil for the sake of being evil. Even the titular mad mermaid isn't your standard cackling homicidal maniac. (She's more of an angsty teenage homicidal maniac.) And I like the gradual reveal of the source of her madness -- it's not as simple as the "woman scorned" cliché it first appears to be.

Not as strong as the first, but still fun enough that I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

I got a bit lost in the plot, but Snow and Talia make me happy beyond happy.
